About Skin Cancer

Over 1 million people in the United States each year are diagnosed with skin cancer. This number is expected to increase as people spend more time outdoors for recreation. Because of increased sun exposure, people of all ages develop skin cancer not just the elderly.

Early detection makes skin cancer much easier to treat and cure.  Like breast self exam, skin self exam can help you identify and new or changing areas on your skin. Monthly exam with the help of a dressing mirror is recommended. Have a friend or spouse help you- many skin cancers are detected by spouses or partners.

If you have a history of skin cancer or known  risk factors (excess sun exposure including blistering sun burns, fair skin, family history of skin cancer, organ transplantation requiring immunosuppressant medication), a regular skin exam by a dermatologist is recommended a minimum of once per year.

The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma.
